Leading Through Difficult Times By Ini Ememobong

It is unarguable that this is most difficult time to be a Nigerian- a period where people are exchanging their children for food items; when people celebrate the tragedy that befalls others, just because they are of the opposing party; when economic uncertainty hovers above our heads; when you have money in the bank, but cannot withdraw; when Christmas arrives and you do not have the means to celebrate; when federal civil servants have not been paid full salaries since January this year- these are the times we live in and the issues Nigerians have had to grapple with.

In Akwa Ibom, the Gentleman at the helms of affairs, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has been saddled with the enormous responsibility of leading his people through these difficult times and taking them through the promise land. Some persons have regretted that the lot fell on him at this period of economic recession, but the Governor believes there could not have been a better time than now to have a finance expert to manage the affairs of state. He posits that nothing takes God by surprise, therefore it could not have been a coincidence for the Divine mandate to come at a time like this.

Governor Emmanuel has exhibited courageous leadership in the face of daunting challenges, this end of year period was not an exception. On December 10, he attended the enthronement service of Apostle Akan Weeks at Reigners Bible Church, the event started but was brought to an abrupt end due to the collapse of the roof of the church. The Governor was a victim, but most surprisingly, while rumors were spreading that the Governor had died, he had returned to the accident site and was coordinating rescue operations. The question is, was the Governor not affected by the incident which almost cost his life? The obvious answer is in the affirmative, but leadership is a higher calling, demanding service above self and sacrificial existence- these, Governor Emmanuel manifestly exhibited on this occasion.

One week after, he had the responsibility of leading his people to render unmitigated praise to God at the Akwa Ibom Christmas Carols Festival- this year’s edition was a huge

improvement in all facets. The financial burden of sponsorship was lifted from the state, as private sector sponsors bankrolled the event. At the end of the festival, truly the theme “Let our king be lifted high” was made manifest. The presence of God towered above our state, grieving hearts were comforted, wounded souls lifted and the land prepared for the bumper harvest of 2017.

It was in recognition of the courageous leadership exhibited by the Governor, at such a demanding period as this, that the enlarged State Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (comprising all National and State Assembly Members, State Working and Executive Committees, Chapter Chairmen, National Delegates and other accredited delegates numbering about 556) unanimously passed a vote of Confidence on the Governor, endorsing him for a second term in 2019. Truly, there is reward for good service.

In this end of year edition, we bring you stories and pictures from various events that defined the season. It’s a combo edition, combining events in November and December. The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly held his Thanksgiving and constituency briefing at Nsit Ubium, attracting top class guests from all over the country. The event has remained a referral point in discourse on effective representation.

We made this edition slightly larger than usual, so that it can be your companion for the many holidays that define this yuletide. It is our earnest expectation that you will find the contents herein appealing and engaging enough. This is wishing you a happy and prosperous 2017.
